Water Microbiology Program
 (Drinking and Environmental)

The Program
The CMPT Water Microbiology Program is intended primarily for laboratories performing drinking water assessments. Challenges are directed towards detection, enumeration and identification of total coliforms, fecal coliforms and E.coli, Enterococcus species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and are graded against the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality (4th edition) Health and Welfare Canada. Samples are simulated stabilized waters that can be assessed by membrane filtration, MPN, or other assays.

Simulated recreational water samples include Enterococcus faecalis as an indicator for marine waters, E.coli for Freshwater beach samples and Pseudomonas aeruginosa for recreational waters samples from spa and swimming pools.

Number of challenges?
Laboratories receive four challenge send-outs per year in April, July, August & November. The send-outs in April, July & Novemeber contain 4 simulated drinking water samples. Simulated recreational water samples are shipped in April and August. Laboratories may participate in either simulated Drinking water or Recreational Water assessments or both.

Water Proficiency Testing Order Form
Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing (CMPT) is a university based, peer directed program. Committee members volunteer their time and are essential for developing the program, selecting challenges, and assessing results. The time and efforts of the committee members is critical to the function of CMPT and is much appreciated.
