Enteric Parasitology - Performance Assessment Scale

The grades are based on a combined result of concentrate and smear.  The new (2006) three-grade scheme, acceptable, acceptable (minor) or unacceptable, is based on the following table:
Acceptable No major errors or misidentifications reported based on 70% or more consensus agreement among the laboratories.

Omission of reporting one or more parasite that is commonly accepted as a non-pathogen, and that was reported by 70% or more of the laboratories, is considered a minor deficiency that would not seriously affect the diagnostic value of the report or alter a therapeutic regimen.
Acceptable
(minor)
No pathogenic parasite results in error by false negative, false positive, or naming error.

Absence of report of non-pathogenic parasite (seen in moderate or greater concentration and reported by 70% or greater of challenged laboratories).
Unacceptable

The report contains deficiencies that could seriously affect the diagnostic value of the report or alter a therapeutic regimen.

Omission of reporting a parasite that is commonly accepted as an enteric parasitic pathogen, and was reported by 70% or more of the laboratories being challenged.  Alternatively, reporting in error the presence of an accepted enteric pathogenic parasite that was not reported by 90% of laboratories.
*Laboratories are strongly advised to retain sample materials following primary reporting of results, as laboratories being graded as unacceptable are encouraged to submit slides to CMPT for review. Following a formal slide review, grading results may be reversed, and the correction will be reported to the provincial accreditation program.
